A Heart Problem

We humans have a spiritual heart problem.

Jeremiah 17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?

Acts 8:21: Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.

Luke 6:45: A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

God is able to change human hearts with an abundance of evil treasure to hearts containing an abundance of good treasure.

2 Chronicles 30:12: Also in Judah the hand of God was to give them one heart to do the commandment of the king and of the princes, by the word of the LORD.

Jeremiah 24:7: And I will give them an heart to know me, that I am the LORD: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God: for they shall return unto me with their whole heart.

Ezekiel 11:19: And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:

Ezekiel 36:26: A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

The heart needs to be changed by the entrance and continuing presence there of Jesus Christ.

Ephesians 3:16-17: That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Proverbs 23:26: My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

Adam Clarke*s Commentary:

My son, give me thine heart This is the speech of God to every human soul; give thy affections to God, so as to love him with all thy heart, soul, mind, and strength.

And let thine eyes observe my ways. Be obedient to me in all things. My son, thou believest that I AM, and that I AM the Fountain of all good. Give me thy heart; it is I alone who can make thee happy. Observe my ways-follow me; do what is right in my sight. This exhortation contains three words: BELIEVE, LOVE and OBEY! This is the sum of God*s counsels to every child of man.

Every time we humans move to a new home the first thing we usually do is give it a thorough house-cleaning.

Jesus* first public work was cleansing the Jerusalem Temple. John chapter 2 The first work He does upon us is to cleanse our hearts so that we might be a suitable habitation for Him.
